About Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli is a rock, not a single mineral — lazurite, calcite, and pyrite together. Mined in Afghanistan since 7000 BCE, it was more valuable than gold in medieval Europe, where it was ground for the ultramarine in Renaissance paintings.

How to Identify a Real Lapis Lazuli
Common fakes: Dyed jasper, sodalite painted with gold flecks, synthetic Gilson lapis.
How to tell the real thing: Real lapis has natural pyrite inclusions that look like random gold flecks — not in a regular pattern. The blue is deep and uneven. The white calcite veining is natural and irregular. Dyed jasper has the blue in streaks that follow the original stone’s grain.
