About Hematite

Hematite is iron oxide — iron itself, rusted and compressed into a crystal so dense it feels metal-cool in the palm. Its name comes from the Greek for blood, because when ground it produces a red powder (this is where ochre pigment comes from in caves 40,000 years old).

Warriors polished it as a mirror and scrying surface. Egyptians packed it around mummies to speed the soul's return. Ayurveda uses it as bhasma (ash) for anaemia.

Chakra & Element

Hematite works primarily with the Root chakra and the Earth element. This is why it tends to appear in healing work around root-related concerns — the frequency of the crystal resonates with this energy centre.

How to Identify a Real Hematite

Common fakes: Magnetic hematite (‘hematine’ — a man-made imitation), plated plastic.

How to tell the real thing: Real hematite is iron-heavy but only very weakly magnetic. Strongly magnetic ‘hematite’ is almost always hematine. Real hematite has a red streak when rubbed on unglazed porcelain (this is the traditional test — hematite means ‘blood stone’).
